How to Become a Certified Teacher in North Carolina

If you live in North Carolina and plan to become a teacher or presently is a teacher and thinking of moving to North Carolina, here is how to be a certified teacher in North Carolina.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    You will need to complete an education program from an accredited college or university in North Carolina or complete a teacher preparation program from an out-of-state college or university accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). If you hold a teaching license with any of the states that North Carolina has a reciprocal licensing agreement, then you are eligible for certification.

  2. Step 2

    Then prepare to take and pass teacher competency examinations, the Praxis I and Praxis II. You may submit GRE scores instead of Praxis scores if this is your first time applying for license in North Carolina.

  3. Step 3

    Contact the state department of education, or department of public instruction and request an application packet for certification or Download all the necessary forms you need at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/licensure/forms/- Complete the North Carolina Initial Teacher Certification Application, this is Form A. Fill out and complete a Verification of Experience Form (Form E) if you had teaching experience from K-12 or/and complete Form CE- Verification of Post Secondary (College) Educator experience Complete Form V - Verification of completion of an approved Teacher Education Program Form V is required if you have graduate degree in education.

  4. Step 4

    Along with the application, you must submit Official Transcripts of all college credits and degrees you've received. Include test scores from GRE or Praxis or Form OS-HQ

  5. Step 5

    If you have a teaching license from another state, include a front and back copy of your valid teaching license.

  6. Step 6

    Send all the materials to Department of Public Instruction in Raleigh, NC. You will need to include an $85 processing fee by check or money-order, or certified check made payable to the Department of Public Instruction.

on 2/6/2009 Praxis 2....aaargh! Nah, it wasn't that bad. I spent weeks worry about it and it was really a lot easier than I though. I guess if I lose my job in Alabama, I can always come to NC. 5*
