Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Internet
- Last year's completed federal tax return
- All tax info and documents from the previous year
-
Step 1
Log on to www.irs.gov and click on the link marked "free file" on the left hand side of the page. Choose "help me find a company". This link will allow you to answer a few questions that will help the IRS determine what free eFile sites are best suited to your needs.
-
Step 2
Answer the questions and click "submit". Results will be shown based on your answers, but read carefully because each eFile site has a set of qualifications that you must meet.
-
Step 3
Browse through each eFile site to find the right one that matches your 2008 tax needs. Many of these sites offer you the chance to complete your state taxes as well, but they do charge a fee. There is a way you can file your state taxes for free as well. Check out the resource links below for more information.
-
Step 4
If you find yourself short on time and would like to bypass this research altogether, please check out the resources below that will link you to my personal favorite free eFile tax sites. I've tried them all and they all work great. I usually use H&R Block, personally.
