Does your dog freak everytime you touch their feet? This article will help you get past the freak to the cutting in a couple of easy steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nail cutters, nail file, tons of treats (good ones) a bucket full of patience
  1. Step 1

Your dog must be okay with having their feet touched if you expect to cut their nails so first...........get your dogs favorite treat. Touch their foot, treat, touch their foot, treat. You get the idea. Work up to holding their foot and treating.

  2. Step 2

Now get out your nice new, sharp nail trimmers. Don't forget your treats. Show your dog the trimmers, treat, do over several times. Next touch the trimmers on your dogs foot, treat, touch dogs foot, treat.

  3. Step 3

Now pick up your dogs foot and touch the trimmers to their foot, treat. Do this until your dog is comfortable and not pulling away frantically. You must create a calm situation where the treats and worth the nail cutting.

  4. Step 4

Try to get one nail done when you first start. Only clip off the very sharp point at the end of the nail. Best to err on the too little side when cutting nails. Lots of treats for having one nail done. If you can; move onto a whole foot. Always wait to move onto the next more difficult step until your dog is "chill" with the present step.

  5. Step 5

You will be working up to all nails on all feet trimmed to get a treat at the end. This is a good routine to stick to; that way there will never be a bad nail day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that you are calm, if you are uptight your dog will sense that something is wrong.
  • Never cut too much at one time; nicking a quick is painful and may take extra work to overcome at the next trimming time.
