Comic book collectors sometimes choose to get their comic books rated by a professional grading company. CGC or the Certified Guaranty Company is one of the most widely known and respected companies that offers these types of services.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Log on to the CGC website and click on Comic Grading to review the entire process of grading from start to finish. Here you will learn how they handle your comic book and all of the security measures that are in place to make sure that the process is fair and secure.

  2. Step 2

Read through the CGC services list to make sure that the CGC services will work for the type of book that you hold. Check to see that your book is not one that they can not certify. Also, it is good to have an estimate of the value of your book since there are maximum values specified depending on the service you are requesting.

  3. Step 3

Decide what types of services you need and how quickly you need the book back. CGC offers a wide variety of options to accommodate almost all needs.

  4. Step 4

Choose the Pre-Screen Service if you are planning on submitting a large number of books. The cost of CGC services can be extensive if you are grading many books so the pre-screen service allows you to specify that if they believe the rating will not be above a certain number they will not proceed with the rest of the process for that specific book.

  5. Step 5

When you are ready to proceed you will need to complete a CGC submission form. These can be found at any CGC Authorized Member Dealer or CGC Internet Partner. To complete the form you will need your customer or dealer number, the address the comic book should be returned to, the quantity of comic books, the month and year of the comic book, the publisher, the title, the issue number, any certifications, pedigree/variant, and the fair market value. If you are unsure about this information speak with the dealer or check the indicia.

  6. Step 6

Submit your comic book directly to CGC if you have purchased a membership with the CGC Collector's Society. An Associate Membership or Premium Membership allow you the option of submitting your comic books directly to CGC for rating.

  7. Step 7

If you are not a member of the CGC Collector's Society, then you will have to go to a local Comic Book Shop that is an Authorized Member Dealer or an Internet Partner. See Resources Link below for a listing of dealers in your area.

  8. Step 8

Payment for the service is made before the comic book is shipped out to CGC.

  9. Step 9

Prep the box and shipping materials for the comic book very carefully. You don't want to ruin the book in shipping. If you have questions about the best manner to ship the book visit the CGC site for shipping suggestions.

  10. Step 10

Ship out the book with the knowledge that the CGC has a written guarantee and a stellar reputation in the industry.
