Challah is a delicious bread that is traditional of Jewish Sabbaths and celebrations. It has a similar consistency to a croissant and is excellent for toast, sandwiches, or a desert bread.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 lb. 12 oz. Bread flour
  • 6 oz. Honey
  • 1 Tbsp Salt
  • 1/2 oz. Active dry yeast
  • 14 oz. Warm water
  • 4 Eggs
  • 4 oz. Butter, melted
  1. Step 1

Blend honey, salt, and 8 ounces of the flour in a large mixing bowl. Add eggs, yeast, water and butter and stir until smooth.

  2. Step 2

Keep stirring and add the remaining flour 2 ounces at a time until the dough becomes thick and pliable. It should be thick enough that it stops sticking to your fingers. Knead the dough for roughly 5 more minutes, until elastic.

  3. Step 3

Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled (roughly 1-1.5 hours).

  4. Step 4

Now punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a 12 inch long, 1 inch diameter strip.

  5. Step 5

Lay three strips side by side, pinching the ends together. Now, braid the dough, pinching the ends together when finished, as well. Place loaves on a greased sheet pan.

  6. Step 6

Bake at 350* until loaves are golden brown; approximately 40 minutes.
    Enjoy!
