Make Sure You Can Pump Enough Milk for Your Baby

Here are some good tips on how to make sure you get enough milk for your baby while pumping.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Breast pump
  1. Step 1

You need to have made up your mind that you are going to do this. It is not hard, but it takes practice. Patience is important. Don't get discouraged if it is difficult in the beginning. It may seem that this should all come naturally, but that is not true for all moms. Pumping is a skill, not at all natural, so don't dispear.

  2. Step 2

You need a good pump. You can get one that is manually operated or electric. If you are going back to work or will need to pump often I recommend an electric pump. Some hospitals rent pumps and some employees make pumps available in nursing rooms. Check EBay and other used Children's stores. Just make sure to sterilize EVERTHING. Buy new bottles and cups. Price range from $50-400.

  3. Step 3

When pumping ensure you are relaxed and focused. Bring a photo of your baby and a blanket or piece of clothing. Close your eyes and get comfortable. Let-down can take a little while, sometimes longer than with your baby. Think about your baby; think about being with him or her. My lactation consultant suggested I think about waterfalls, and it worked.

  4. Step 4

Try to pump at the same times when you would normally nurse. If your baby eats every 3 hrs, try to nurse every three hours. Pumping in the morning is usually easier than towards the end of the day.

  5. Step 5

FENUGREEK is an herb which can help you increase milk supply. Pumping between nursings can increase supply. Keep the baby with you while pumping (if at all possible, at least a good tips while you are getting used to this).

on 1/30/2009 Absolutely! But there are so many obstacles out there; ranging from people who thinks it should be done behind a closed door, to people who do not understand that it is not always easy to the ones who are not ready to make to decision to stick with it. It is absolutely not for everyone; and I will never judge, but I wish society would be more supportive.
