Comic books are both a great hobby and a great investment if you have a good eye for value. If you are thinking about selling any of your comic books it is essential to have an idea of the grading of the book so you can determine its value. Here are a few tips to help you grade your comic books.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a professional grading firm such as the CGC, the Certified Guaranty Company, to review, rate, and seal the comic book. Be careful with such services as the processing time can be lengthy and the cost of process may not be cost effective depending on what you are selling. If you are looking to sell right away this may not be your best option.

  2. Step 2

If using a professional firm is not cost effective, educate yourself on the different terms associated with grading a comic book. There are several levels - Mint, Near Mint, Very Fine, Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. There are different criteria for each level.

  3. Step 3

Buy a Comic Book Pricing Guide, preferably the most up to date guide you can find. You may find appropriate information on what you can expect the comic's value to be.

  4. Step 4

Compare your comic book with others held by friends and fellow comic book collectors. This can help you figure out what other people consider each grade level to be - remember that grading is subjective and that something you would consider near mint might be considered very fine or just fine to someone else.

  5. Step 5

Once you have become familiar with the grade levels, you've reviewed the pricing guide, and you have compared your comic book with others, you will be better prepared to assign a grade level to your comic book.

  6. Step 6

Be fair and don't take it personal. Be as up front and honest about the condition of the comic book before you put it up for sale with a grade in the description.
