Clean, Show Quality Samoyed

These are just some tricks I picked up when preparing for a dog show or just to show-off the luxurious coat a Samoyed possesses

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Slicker Brush
  • Tooth comb with rotating teeth
  • Whitening Shampoo
  • Detangling Solution or leave-in conditioner
  • Pin Cushion brush
  • Cornstarch
  • Towels
  • Hairdryer
  • Couple of Cotton Balls
  1. Step 1
    Slicker Brush, Rotating Tooth Comb

First off, brush out loose fur, dirt, and dead skin from the Samoyed's undercoat with a slicker brush. After, use the tooth comb with the spinning teeth to go through the outer coarser coat.

  2. Step 2

Before bathing your sammy, stick two cotton balls into the dog's ears to block out any water(Don't push it too deep though). Soak the coat thoroughly with lukewarm water and work a whitening shampoo into the coat. Make sure to massage coat until it gives off a rich lather. Rinse out well or you'll have skin problems later.

  3. Step 3

Let the dog shake out the water and wring off any excess by gently grabbing handfuls of fur and squeeze. Soak up rest with warm towel by rubbing vigorously up and down the body.

  4. Step 4
    Leave-in Conditioner

Spray a light coat of detangler(homemade by adding into a spray bottle conditioner with 3 parts water) or a formula of leave-in conditioner(for dogs of course) directly into the fur. Distribute evenly but don't overdo it or you'll get your sammy soaking wet again.

  5. Step 5
    Pin-Cushion Brush

Set your hair dryer setting to medium. Using a pin-cushion brush, from head to tail, lift sections of fur away from the body while sweeping the hair dryer back and forth drying each section. This gives the coat a fluffed-up look.

  6. Step 6

Now here's a trick not many people know about, when thoroughly dried, give the coat a light dusting of cornstarch. Using the slicker brush, brush out the excess. This gives the coat a powdery look plus it soaks up oil excreted from the body so that the coat will not look so greasy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cornstarch not only soak up body oils, it keeps dirt from clinging onto the fur.
  • Rotating teeth are good because it glides into slightly matted hair easily. If the fur looks like a carpet weave, use a serrated blade detangler or if really serious, use scissors.
