Dancing is a fun and effective way to lose weight and tone your muscles. Here are a few ways to incorporate a dance routine into your workout.

  1. Step 1

    Ballet is amazingly good for weight loss. When done properly, you will feel every muscle in your body working. You literally feel like a rubber band being stretched! Although it can be done at home, beginners should take a class because it's also a dance form that can cause injury if not done properly. Even football players are sometimes asked to "tackle" ballet because it teaches coordination and thoroughly works the body.

  2. Step 2

    To tone your midsection and strength give belly dancing a shake. This ancient art is a fun way to bring sexy back and get killer abs! I've learned the basics with a DVD by Veena and Neena. Twins that will teach you basic shimmies to get your body looking hot!

  3. Step 3

    Modern dance is an another excellent form of dance to tone your arms. The movements are exaggerated and expressive! Take a beginner's class in modern or just move around and let the music inspire your interpretative moves.

  4. Step 4

    Anybody say salsa? What a fun way to burn calories. Not only does salsa teach you coordination, it's also a fun way to socialize and meet a super cute salsa partner! If you don't have a partner, no sweat. Try doing a basic cha-cha step to some music and take it from there. Areas that will be toned include your legs, thighs and midsection.

  5. Step 5

    Hip hop is a dance genre that is fast and great for an overall workout. As demonstrated by the dancers on America's Best Dance Crew, this form of dance is very intense and powerful.

  6. Step 6

    Tap dancing! Somthing I've always wanted to try! What a great way to tone your leg muscles and make lots of noise doing it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you live in NY, head over to the Broadway Dance Center for affordable classes in hip hop, modern, you name it.
  • Most gym memberships include classes so try a dance class.
  • Dvd's are an inexpensive and convenient way to get in shape and dance.
  • Always stretch before dancing
