Celebrate Valentine's Day on a Shoestring Budget

Valentine's Day is a time to give from your heart, rather than your wallet! Try these inspired and affordable tips and tricks to make this Valentine's Day the best ever!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Plan ahead! The week before the big day, make a list of the things that you can make at home rather than purchase in stores. Easy DIY projects include homemade Valentine Cards, decorations, and favorite recipes.

  2. Step 2

Skip the fancy boxed chocolates and make your own confections. Chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate caramel apples and triple chocolate truffles are super easy and very affordable to make at home in your own kitchen.

  3. Step 3

Create a chocolate bouquet with your homemade confections or store purchased goodies. Think shish-ka-bob of chocolate! Alternate your favorite boxed or homemade chocolate or fudge with festive gumdrop, strawberries and soft candies on skewers and toothpicks of various lengths. Cut an apple in half and place cut side down onto a decorative plate. This will serve as the base of the bouquet. Insert skewers randomly around the apple with the tallest skewers placed on top and shorter skewers inserted around the bottom to create a graduated eff

  4. Step 4

Forgo the traditional greeting card and create a treasured keepsake that won't get thrown in the trash. Find an elegant picture frame (huge sales going on right now!) and create a handwritten love note and insert it into the frame. Or purchase a collage frame and fill it with pictures, personal love notes, or small keepsakes that you hold dear. Bad handwriting? Type a love note on your computer, chose an elegant font, and print it out for framing. It's that simple!

  5. Step 5

Can't afford a romantic dinner away from home? Trim you dinner budget in half by choosing affordable entrees and simple libations that you can make from what you already have in your pantry. For example, choose an affordable and elegant pasta dish and pair it with a signature cocktail, wine spritzer or champagne punch.
