Step 1
Start small. Try breastfeeding around extended family or friends. You'll like feel more comfortable in a more controlled setting with people who also make you feel comfortable. Breastfeeding in public discreetly can take practice so take advantage of these opportunities.
-
Step 2
Dress in clothes that make breastfeeding in public easy yet discreet. I always wear a nursing tank top under my shirt. This allows your stomach and sides to be covered at all times. Wear a shirt over the tank top that is loose fitting. Pull the shirt up just to the top of your breast on the side you're using to nurse. Lower the flap on the nursing tank top and allow your baby to latch on. Your body is covered and the shirt on top covers the top part of your breast. There are companies that make attractive nursing shirts that serve a similar purpose.
-
Step 3
Buy a nursing cover. Many of them have a special neckline that allows you to see you and your baby to see each other yet everything is covered to others. This is a better option than a blanket for that reason. However, a blanket will work in a pinch.
-
Step 4
Choose a quiet location with little traffic. Many public places offer special breastfeeding rooms so ask an employee if a room like this is available.
-
Step 5
Know your rights. Most states have specific laws that allow women to breastfeed in public. Check the resources below for a list of states and their respective laws.
-
Step 6
Be prepared for negative reactions and how you'll respond to them. Because breastfeeding in public is still not widely accepted, you may encounter negative reactions. If someone gives you a dirty look, flash a big smile at them. If they suggest you breastfeed in the restroom, ask them if they would eat their meal in the bathroom. If someone is harassing you or making you feel uncomfortable, get assistance from a staff member.
-
Step 7
Remember why you are breastfeeding in public. Ultimately, your baby's needs are your only concern. It's not your problem if adults feel uncomfortable because you are meeting the basic needs of your child in the healthiest way possible. Putting the focus on your baby rather than the act of breastfeeding in public may make you feel more comfortable.

on 2/26/2009 I breastfed both my boys. I was very bad with my first son as he would not nurse holding him horizontally...I always had to feed him using the "football" method. Because of this, I kinda HAD to get over my "shyness" of breastfeeding in public really quick. I remember going to a restaurant in the mall with my mom and daughter. They put their menus up to "shield" me and my son! LOL I think it is horrible that there would be a LAW forbidding breast feeding when there are so many other things that are much more offensive out there that are UNNATURAL! Love the article.
