Step 1
You need a headshot. A picture of you, mainly your face. Above the shoulders, a close-up, in black and white. Many color shots are acceptable now, too. Headshots can be expensive. If you don't have the extra money, find a friend to take a roll of pictures of you. Your picture should reflect YOU. If you want to work in commercials, smile, smile, smile. If you want to work in film or television, reflect the part you'd be best for...business, character actor, strong and silent type, sexy, athletic, etc. Get a few good shots, have them the right size which is 8.5x10 and keep them in a file. Update your photos when you change your hair, grow a beard, etc. Add your name, contact information, height and weight to the back of your headshot. Don't write it, print it out on a label and stick it to the back of your headshot.

Step 2
Once you have a headshot, get an agent listing. This is a book listing agents, their addresses, phone numbers, names, etc. Samuel French bookstores have what you need. So do some other book stores including online stores. Look through the book and find an agent that best fits you. What type of agent are they? Film? Commercial? Are they located close enough to you? Are they taking on new clients? The book will answer these questions.

Step 3
Write a short introductory letter to every agent you think is appropriate for you. Make sure every thing is spelled correctly.
Purchase manilla envelopes and mail your letter along with your headshot to the agents you choose. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope in your mailing so the agent may send you back a response. -
Step 4
Don't give up. Some agents can take months to respond. Keep your communication going. Call them and ask if they've received your mailing.
Wait. Be patient. Don't give up. The more agents you contact, the better your chances of hearing something.
