Don't Throw Away Your Used Furniture

When buying new furniture for your home, the most difficult part tends to be figuring out how to get rid of the used furniture that you are replacing to make room for the new. In the case of ruined furniture, there may not be much that can be done to restore it or make it usable, but most is still perfectly good and, especially during times of economic worry, it is a terrible shame to throw away anything that can still be put to good use somewhere. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Trade it in. You will not receive any store credit for doing so, but many retailers will haul away your used furniture for you when they make their delivery. In most cases, the charge for doing so is included in the delivery fee.

    • 2

Give it away. Ask around and see if any of your friends or coworkers know someone who is moving out for the first time. Young adults frequently get their first apartment without first purchasing anything for it. Sometimes they don't have the money to buy their own and would happily take something used.

    • 3

Sell it. There are entire sections in the classifieds for used furniture. The same is true for online classified sites such as Craigslist or auction sites like eBay. Post a flyer on a local bulletin board with a picture, price, and your phone number. You could even put it in a yard sale and hope that someone who stops buy picks it up.

Donate it. Thrift stores, Goodwill, and many churches happily take donations of used furniture either for resale or to give to needy families. This way, you solve your problem and get to do something good for someone else at the same time. Most of the time, the church or reseller will have a truck at their disposal to come pick it up.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are selling, specify that the buyer has to pick up the item and you won't even have to worry about delivering it.

  • If you are going to have the retailer pick up your used furniture, make sure to tell them when they schedule delivery so they can make sure there is sufficient room on the delivery truck.

Great ways to reuse what we don't need. In my neighborhood people put items on the curb with a free sign. Thanks.
