Step 1
Call in sick to work. For once you are actually sick, so when you call in, you should make the most of it. Get your boss on the phone and give him/her the full hacking treatment. Offer to come in later if you are feeling better and be grateful when they insist that you get some rest instead.
-
Step 2
Shower, brush your teeth and get dressed. This will draw fire from true sick day enthusiasts, but I personally feel more comfortable and able to relax with clean hair and fresh breath. Just sayin’.
-
Step 3
Stock the Fridge. It’s a good idea to hit up the grocery store at the first sign of illness. Make sure you’ve got plenty of Kleenex, cold medicine (doctors generally only take aspirin with a cold, so don’t go too crazy) and throat lozenges. Next you’ll want to invest in a whole host of comfort foods starting with that old standby... chicken noodle soup. It’s even better if you have a doting friend or relative or mate who will cook you up a batch of homemade soup but if not, Campbell’s works fine. I’m more of a tomato soup and tuna sandwich kind of gal, but choose the foods that speak to you at the moment. Try to avoid dairy if possible in order to keep the phlegm at bay.

Step 4
Hit the DVD stash. This is the time to start watching those tv series that everyone else in the world has seen but you. Still unsure why the Sopranos was such a hit? Wanna know what those numbers mean on Lost? Crave the fast talking Gilmore Girls? You’re looking at a full day of television watching so you might as well get a series you can sink your teeth into (True Blood?).

Step 5
Make a List. One thing I always seem to say to myself when I have a cold is “When I start feeling better I’m going to take a vitamin everyday, workout more often, clean the bathtub grout, etc…” Keep a notepad and pen by the couch so that you can jot down inspirations or ideas of things you’d like to do once your nose stops running and your head stops aching. This is a good time to be grateful for your overall health - aside from the cold that has taken over your day.
