Things You'll Need:
- 2 popsicle sticks
- A 2 1/2" Styrofoam ball
- white glue
- Colorful yarn
- pipe cleaner
- Q-tip cotton swabs
- 1 3"x3" piece of cardboard
- scissors
- darning needle
- "Wiggle eyes"
- Acrylic paint
-
Step 1
1. Your Styrofoam ball will be the head. Gently push one of your popsicle sticks 1" into the head. Pull it back out and, using a cotton swab, apply white glue to each side of the stick and gently push the glued end back into the head. Put the head aside until the glue is COMPLETELY DRY and firmly holds the stick in place.
2. Now it's time to make the body out of pom poms from your colorful yarn. You can mix more than one color. Cut 10 pieces of yarn, each 7-inches long and lay aside. Next, wrap your ball of yarn 20 times around the cardboard. Snip off the remaining ball of yarn. Carefully slide the yarn off the cardboard and tie in the middle with one of the cut 7-inch pieces of yarn.
3. Now snip the loops at each end and you have made a pom-pom! Repeat this process until you have 10 pom-poms. -
Step 2
4. Thread a 15" piece of yarn into your darning needle and tie about five ties in one end to form one big knot.
5. Now attach each pom-pom together by putting the needle through each one. Slide them all together in a row to make the caterpillar(about 10" long). Make another knot or two on the last pom-pom to hold them all together.
6. Use the paint to color the caterpillars head to match its body. Make sure that the paint is COMPLETELY DRY before you handle it. Glue on the "Wiggle eyes". A pipe cleaner glued into the top of the head will make his "antennas." -
Step 3
7. When you have finished the head, attach it to the pom-pom body by tying the stick tightly to the body with a piece of yarn, and snip off the excess.
8. Tie an 8-inch piece of yarn to the other craft stick, 1 1/2" from the end. Use the yarn tie to attach the stick to the tail of the puppet. Paint the stick to camouflage it.
9. To operate your caterpillar hold one stick in each hand and make him inch his way across the table. Turn the head stick from side to side to make him look around.
