How to Decide to Home School Your Child

Should you home school your children? What are the advantages of home schooling?

1. Consider their education first. Are your children getting the education that you think they should? Or are the teachers more baby-sitters than teachers? Are your kids coming home with spelling papers that they have spelled the words correct, but the teacher marked them as wrong? Does your child's class often watch movies for their class time? If the answer is yes to any of these questions you may need to home school your child, just to give them the education they deserve.

2. Health. When you child is around other children, they share the same germs. They will bring home any and all virus bugs. They will have to go to the doctor, where you will have to sit in the waiting room and you will catch other bugs that will make you and the rest of your family sick. If you home school your child, they will not be exposed to these health risks.

3. Safety is a concern. Other kids that your child has to go to public school with may bully your child, hit them or hurt them in some other way. If your child is home schooled, you don't have to worry about them coming home with bruises or cuts from the other children they are around all day. Not only that but they also learn bad habits from being around other children, like swearing for example.

4. Economics - this is a big factor. Everyday the teacher or school sends a paper home asking for funds for one thing or another. When you home school, you pay for your books, which you can buy at yard sales or thrift stores for a little money, and then that's it for that school year, no other expenses.

5. Curriculum and relationships - you can make your child's curriculum anything you want it to be. If you are a spiritual person, you can teach your children spiritual things. If you like sports, teach them about sports. And expect the relationship with your child to be developed into something that benefits both of you. So these are just a few of the benefits of home schooling.

on 5/14/2009 Nice article though I can't say I agree with numbers 3 and 4 though. I mean if economics is a big factor for you, there are alternative schools that can connect you to financing institutions. Fieldstone Academy (http://www.fieldstoneacademy.org) is a good example of this. For number 3, I think the problem is not being exposed to swearing or bad habits but rather imparting values to the children in a way that they would know how to deal with these things. While traditional schools may have lost this style of teaching, a lot of alternative schools actually focus on them. If those are your concerns, Better send your children to an alternative school rather than homeschool.I agree very much though, with what you said about curriculum and relationships with your child.
