Say "I Love You" in Portuguese

Ever wanted to tell someone that you love them in the language of Bossa Nova, Carnival, Samba, and football (the kind with your feet)? Saying "I Love You" in Portuguese is easy!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Voice
  • Someone you love (preferably who loves you back)
  1. Step 1

I Love You in Portuguese is written "Te Amo". But knowing how to spell it isn't enough - you need to know how to say it too. I'll walk you through the pronunciation using an accent common in Brazil.

  2. Step 2

"Te" is pronounced like the 'chee' in cheese. Even though the words starts with a T, you do not make a T sound when you say it. That is just one of the many quirks of the Portuguese language.

  3. Step 3

"Amo" is a combination of "ahh" (like the beginning of the word Amish) and "Moe" (like the bartender in the Simpsons). Put the emphasis on the "ahh" part of the word.

  4. Step 4

Put it all together now - chee AHH-moe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Different countries and different regions of Brazil may pronounce the "te" as a "tay" instead of "chee".
  • Smile a little when you say it. Maybe give her a little wink.

on 2/13/2009 I was laughing when you made a reference to the bartender in Simpsons...hahaha. This reminds me of my linguistics class with the pronunciation and all.
