Before you even think about purchasing an Australian Water Dragon as a pet, you need to think about where its going to live once you get it home. Unlike an iguana, which can temporarily kept in a pet carrier, you should set up your Australian Water Dragon's terrarium before it moves into your house. When you are setting up the terrarium you should try to duplicate the environment the dragon would choose in nature.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up a terrarium for your Australian Water dragon. Your terrarium should be 4'X3'X2, this is large enough for a fully grown Australian water dragon to live in comfort.

  2. Step 2

Place a branch in your terrarium. The branch needs to be large enough to hold your dragon's weight.

  3. Step 3

Provide your Australian Water Dragon with a large enough water bowl so they can submerge their entire body.

  4. Step 4

Place a large flat rock in the terrarium so that your dragon will have somewhere warm to bask.

  5. Step 5

Australian water dragons love to have somewhere to hide, so provide some cavernous areas that they can use for caves.

  6. Step 6

Keep the terrarium at a constant 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

  7. Step 7

Set up a UVB light over your Australian water dragons terrarium. The dragon relies on UV rays to maintain its good health. When you are setting up your light make sure you read the instructions very carefully. The instructions will tell you exactly how far away your light needs to be from the terrarium for your dragon to get the most UV rays.
