How to Make a Kaleidoscope

Beautiful patterns like multi-colored snowflakes can be seen in a kaleidoscope. These patterns are made by reflections of reflections. The kaleidoscope was invented by Sir David Brewster in 1816.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two long, thin mirrors (approx. 12" X 3")
  • Duct tape
  • Saran wrap
  • Black construction paper
  • Wax paper
  • Pieces of colored paper
  • Beads (optional)
  1. Step 1

    Using the duct tape, fasten the mirrors together along one long edge of each so they are shaped like a V, with their reflective sides facing each other.

  2. Step 2

    Tape a piece of black paper across the top of the V.

  3. Step 3

    Use the black paper to make a triangle the same size as the end of the kaleidoscope. Make a round peephole in this paper and cover the inside with the Saran Wrap. Make sure the Saran Wrap is pulled tight.

  4. Step 4

    Drop in some pieces of colored paper and beads.

  5. Step 5

    Cover the other end of the kaleidoscope with a piece of wax paper, taping it to the kaleidoscope.

  6. Step 6

    Look in the peephole and you will see a perfect pattern. each time you shake the kaleidoscope, you will get a new pattern. No matter how often you shake it, you will never get two patterns exactly alike.
