Step 1
The first step is to understand where the shifter is located on the motorcycle. When you are sitting on the motorcycle the shifter will be located near your left foot. It will look like a small lever.
-
Step 2
After the motorcycle has been started, you will need to shift into first gear. This gear will be found by pulling in the clutch handle on the left handlebar and pushing the lever all the way down. You are now in first gear.
-
Step 3
Let the clutch out slowly and accelerate. After the engine has met a high RPM, pull in the clutch and you can shift into 2nd gear. One click up on the shifter will be neutral. So you will need to shift through once more to 2nd.
-
Step 4
You will then accelerate until the motor reaches optimum RPM's and then shift up to 3rd. The biggest thing is learning where the gears are. This may vary by make but in most cases, all the way down on the lever is first, up one is neutral, up two is 2nd, up two is 3rd, up three is 4th, etc. Practice with the motor turned off, squeezing the clutch and shifting through the gears.
