Renting a car should be an easy, straight forward thing. Unfortunatly, these days car rental companies are trying to squeeze as much money out of their customers. The best way to avoid this is to be educated as to their policies, and your rights. Some of these aren't scams per se, just the car rental company following the letter of their policy. Here's how to protect yourself when you rent a car.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fill the tank before you return the car. And by fill I mean top off. I know you aren't technically supposed to do this but some car rental agencies will charge you a fuel fee if the needle isn't on F. Also, fill the tank right before returning the vehicle and keep the receipt.

  2. Step 2

If you need to change your rental plans notify the car rental agency as soon as possible. They won't hesitate to charge you a 'no show' fee. Don't give them an excuse to do this.

  3. Step 3

Pick up and return the car at the time you contracted for. This means do not pick it up, or drop it off early or late. They can charge you a fee (and they're withing their rights to do so) if you don't return/pickup the vehicle when you said you would.

  4. Step 4

Here's a big one. Some less than honest car rental agencies will attempt to sell you additional car insurance. If you have car insurance already you DO NOT need to buy this. They might say their insurance covers more or whatever. Do not buy it, if they insist just walk away.

Tips & Warnings
  • ALWAYS read their contract before signing it, you have no idea what you may be agreeing to
  • FILL the tank before you return the vehicle and get a receipt that shows you did
  • Don't buy their insurance, if they insist, ask to speak with a manager or call their main office
