How to Perform First Aid for Anaphylaxis

Recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis (see photo)

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call 911. As with all emergencies, remember you can only help so much without having the drugs and equipment you need.

  2. Step 2

Check for special medications, such as an auto-injector of epinephrine (for example, EpiPen). Administer the drug as directed - usually by pressing the auto-injector against the person's thigh and holding it in place for several seconds. Massage the injection site for 10 seconds to enhance absorption. You may also have the person take an antihistamine pill if he or she is able to do so without choking. Look for medical emergency ID bracelets or necklaces.

  3. Step 3

Have the patient lie in shock position, or trendelensburg, unless the person is unable to do so due to spinal injury or if it is making breathing difficult.

  4. Step 4

Loosen constrictive clothing. Do not admisnister fluids

  5. Step 5

Put the patient in recovery position if they begin vomiting or bleeding orally.

  6. Step 6

If the patient is unresponsive, begin CPR
