Step 1
Check with your local fire department or fire warden to see if you need a burning permit to have a bonfire. There are regulations that specify when you can burn depending on the time of year and you will want to make sure that you are following these regulations.
-
Step 2
The space around the bonfire should be clear of anything that can burn. Ideally you should have a ring of dirt or sand around the bonfire. That will help prevent the fire from spreading beyond the bonfire.
-
Step 3
Check the weather to see if it is expected to be windy. The wind can carry sparks or flames to nearby trees or grassy areas. This can easily start a fire.
-
Step 4
Have buckets of water to use in case your fire gets out of hand. You should also pour water on the ashes when you are finished with your bonfire.
-
Step 5
Do not leave your bonfire unattended.
-
Step 6
Don't let any one run or goof around by the fire. Someone could trip and fall into the fire.
-
Step 7
Use a shovel or rake to turn over the ashes when your bonfire is done. Pour water on any embers.
-
Step 8
If your bonfire burns out of control and spreads and the fire department has to respond, you may be responsible for the cost of putting out the fire that you started with you bonfire.
