A bad boss is highly disorganized and does not know how to put a project together. Maybe your boss is great at their particular job, and have vast knowledge of the industry. But if they cannot explain to you how to put that knowledge in practice and organize a project accordingly, then maybe they aren't really meant to manage anyone. Good bosses have to be good managers.

Another trait of a bad boss is that they are unwilling to teach you and correct any mistakes you make appropriately. Especially in the beginning of your career, you need attention from your boss and you need to know that you are doing the right job. Even as you progress, you need clear explanations on the job at hand in order to perform it well.

A bad boss will not tell you their expectations of you. Usually, this is because they don't really know it themselves! Clear expectations will help you perform your job well, and you will know if you have achieved your goal or not before that important board meeting.

A bad boss takes all the credit for your work. Remember that brainstorming session where you gave all the good ideas? Or that report you have written that took you hours? If your boss takes credit for that, then she is a terrible boss.
A good boss knows the value of their team, and are happy to point to their superiors just how well everyone in their team is performing their job.

The boss who organizes lots of meetings that never solve anything and take away precious time is a bad boss.

A bad boss also fails to recognize that you have the need for a personal life outside the office, and they expect you to work 24 hours a day. If you don't work in a profession where lives are hanging in the balance (and most people don't) then there is no need for you to be in the office past office hours.

A bad boss never congratulates you for your accomplishments. People thrive on compliments, and everyone wants recognition for their hard work. Bad bosses don't see that, and they never give the praise you need to stay motivated.
