How to Prepare Fresh Turnips

Preparing Fresh Turnips for a winter meal adds nutrition and an often overlooked vegetable to your menu. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1-2 lbs. of turnips, tops or no tops
  • A medium sized cooking pot
  • Cutting board, or paperplate
  • Sharp paring knife.
  • Salt, water, sugar, pepper

      Purchase some turnips about 2 lbs. These can have tops on or removed. Which you choose is your choice. They will cook the same. If using those with tops, cut the tops off and save for a different meal, or cook separateldy for additional greens.

      Wash the turnips well, and begin peeling them from the top of the turnip to the root end. Peel like you are peeling an apple. Only remove the layer that is the dept of the skin. After peeling, cut the turnip into slices about 1/4 inch thick or thicker if you prefer, or into small chunks. Place the water, a small pinch of salt and sugar, into a medium size pan. Bring to a boil and then simmer till tender. Turnips tender fast, so check them often. The turnips can be kept hot by covering and leaving in the pan until serving time.

      Reheat the turnips if necessary, they are best served hot. Drain the turnips and place them into a serving bowl, with some pepper and butter added to the top. Turnips have an inherent sweet peppery taste.

Tips & Warnings

  • If buying with tops on, don't waste them, just cook like preparing spinach.

  • Turnips are good eaten fresh also, and thin slices can be curved and toothpicked into flower petals for deco on a salad. With a little piece of carrot in the center.

  • Watch closely they have natural sugar and if the pan gets too low on water the will scorch.
