If you have a website to market, you need to get backlinks. These links to your website are what will get readers to find you as well as to raise the Google page rank of your site. If you want a high page rank for your site and you want readers, you have to get backlinks. It's just as important as search engine optimization to get your site noticed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Post articles in article directories. Have you ever seen article directories and wondered why they were there? That's why. Each article has a link or two in it or at the end of it that is providing a backlink to something else. It's free to post articles to article directories to get a backlink.

  2. Step 2

Bookmark your articles. Use social bookmarking sites like Reddit, StumbleUpon and Digg.

  3. Step 3

Use a blog to talk about the site you want to promote. In your own blog, you can link to it as many times as you want. Put a link in your blogroll as well as linking to it every few posts.

  4. Step 4

Fill in the profile area for any site that you join. You can include links on many of them, or you can create your own html link.

  5. Step 5

Avoid buying links. There are many link farms out there that sell links to try to raise your search engine ranking. This is not helpful, and it may get your site banned from search engines. Google is particularly intolerant toward buying links.

on 2/9/2009 You can, but ultimately you are only in control of what you do and not what others do. You also have to remember that everyone with a site or an article to plug is doing the same thing. I have a lot of poeple how have linked to my sites from their blogs after I posted a comment on theirs with a link to my blog. If you don't place the links out there, people won't find out about the site and won't link to it.

on 2/9/2009 I guess I'm saying that the most-powerful backlinks are the ones OTHER PEOPLE CHOOSE TO MAKE TO YOU. - - - - You ~can~ help them out by linking to them, emailing them to tell them your linking to them and reminding them that it's nice to 'link unto others as you would have them link unto you.'

on 2/9/2009 I do stay away from link farms- they can actually lower your page rank.

One thing: Having your link among lists of links won't necessarily raise your Google Rank (as Google probably gives 'list sites' a lower Quotient).

There are free programs out there that 'ping' the list-sites, you would spend your time better by putting links wherever you can on social-networks: sure, the profile page and forum signatures; and also the blogs they provide, mass-bulletins to friends, and comments on individual friends' blogs and -profiles.

(See, your Google Rank is based on Stanford's Google Equation---the one they use to figure out 'how many people have heard of your site.')
