Looking to purchase a new laptop? There are several things that you should consider when comparing laptops in order to find the one that's right for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • Access to assorted laptop models
  1. Step 1

You can do much of your "homework" online when searching for a laptop. Functionality, size, weight, price, and manufacturer's reputation are all things to consider when deciding which laptop best suits your individual needs.

If you are a student or traveler, weight is most likely going to be a factor of higher importance than it is to others.

If you will be using a laptop to design graphics, view autoCAD files, or other projects that require viewing of large maps or drawings, then screen size and virtual memory will be important.

If you will be doing a large amount of data entry, or 10-key entry, the size and feel of the keyboard (and whether it comes with a separate 10-key numeric pad) is very important.

Consumer Reports, CNet and PC Magazine are all good places to start your search. Each site can give you detailed information regarding price, hardware specifications, and user reviews.

  2. Step 2

Once you've narrowed down your list of laptops you think you might be interested in, consider going to physically check them out at a local store. Best Buy, Sams Club, Fry's, Office Depot and Staples are just a few of the brick and mortar type stores where you can test drive laptops.

  3. Step 3

You may need to go home and re-check available pricing once you've had a few hands-on demonstrations at a store or two. Often you will be able to get a better price (even with shipping costs) from some of the larger online laptop retailers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to compare software bundles that are offered with some laptops! Software can affect pricing (if purchased separately) by $200 or more.
  • Review warranty information, rebate instructions, and store policies for returns/repairs before purchasing.
