You can do much of your "homework" online when searching for a laptop. Functionality, size, weight, price, and manufacturer's reputation are all things to consider when deciding which laptop best suits your individual needs.
If you are a student or traveler, weight is most likely going to be a factor of higher importance than it is to others.
If you will be using a laptop to design graphics, view autoCAD files, or other projects that require viewing of large maps or drawings, then screen size and virtual memory will be important.
If you will be doing a large amount of data entry, or 10-key entry, the size and feel of the keyboard (and whether it comes with a separate 10-key numeric pad) is very important.
Consumer Reports, CNet and PC Magazine are all good places to start your search. Each site can give you detailed information regarding price, hardware specifications, and user reviews.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure to compare software bundles that are offered with some laptops! Software can affect pricing (if purchased separately) by $200 or more.
Review warranty information, rebate instructions, and store policies for returns/repairs before purchasing.

Excellent tips, especially checking the keyboard in advance. If it doesn't feel right, then all else is naught. -
