Decide what you need. Before shopping for a chipper shredder you will want to figure out exactly what you want your machine to do. Do you need heavy work like grinding tree limbs or are you primarily looking to shred leaves and twigs? Electric shredders and combination units will handle light work but will be limited by cord length. Heavier gas-driven units can handle bigger wood and can be used away from an electrical source. The more demanding the task, the more expensive chipper shredder you will probably need.

Do your research. Consumer Guide liked the Patriot CSV-2515 electric chipper-shredder. At an estimated $890, this chipper shredder handles small branches to 2 1/2" in diameter, leaves and other yard debris well. It is small enough to move and store easily.

Choose a chipper shredder that fits your demands. Personally, I use the McCulloch MCS 1400. For my yard I only need a lightweight machine. It's a small electric chipper shredder that is easily rolled from place to place and handles light work nicely. I wouldn't chip branches over 1" in diameter with it though it is supposed to handle slightly larger. The assembly instructions are somewhat skewed and the chipper shredder does have a few idiosyncrasies you need to get used to, but you couldn't get a better, small chipper shredder for such a low price anywhere. It sells for an estimated $200.
