You've just been invited to a party, shower, dinner, wedding, or other soiree that you do not wish to attend. How do you decline the invitation respectfully and without hurting the person's feelings? Here are some tips for politely and respectfully declining an invitation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • your wits
  • an invitation that you do not wish to attent
  • tact
  1. Step 1

Invitations received by mail: The best thing to do when you receive an invitation in the mail is to respond promptly with the RSVP that you will regretfully not be able to attend. Check "Will not attend" on the RSVP card and return it promptly. No explanation is necessary, however sending a card or gift is a great way to soften the blow.

  2. Step 2

Invitation by Email or other online methods: Respond promptly with regrets that you will not be able to attend. Again, explanations are not necessary and the sending of a card or gift may lessen any hurt feelings.

  3. Step 3

Face to Face Invitations: My standard answer when receiving an invitation is "Let me check my calendar and get back with you". Just don't forget to get back with the person and let them know that you will regretfully be unable to attend.

  4. Step 4

Anytime a person asks you why you will not be attending their function, now is not the time to lie. If you are up front with a person, and show regret that you are not able to attend, often that is enough. Be honest without being blunt. If you are simply too busy, let them know that you have previous engagements. If you are ill, of course the answer is simple. At any rate, be gracious and thank the person for the invitation. Cards and gifts are good to smooth the situation over.
