Step 1
Remove any existing items from the shelves and place them in organized, designated piles: what to keep, what to toss, what to store and what to give away. Box the store or giveaway items and trash the toss pile to avoid clutter and possible trip hazards.
-
Step 2
Now that the fixture is empty, it is time to clean it and repair any nicks or scratches. Now is also the time to consider revamping! If it is in need of a fresh coat (or a whole new one) of paint, go for it. Just allow it to dry completely before placing any items on it.
-
Step 3
If the shelves are adjustable, arrange them to where the center is the focal point; this can be achieved by creating a larger opening in the center.
-
Step 4
Always group similar items in a random order for balance and impact; this will allow the eye to flow and make each item stand out rather that blend as one. This is particularly true if you are a collector of valuable and have expensive pieces mixed with reproductions.
-
Step 5
Use decorative boxes or baskets to hold the unappealing items that we all have; such as CDs, small paperback books, ceiling fan remotes, etc.
-
Step 6
Always use the available space by layering items of different height and width, allowing space between each item for better viewing. This can also be achieved with books as well.
-
Step 7
Include natural elements such as plants, flowers, and seashells. Incorporate the same elements in the rest of the room, on tables and in the fabrics and textures of the furniture.
