Step 1
When looking for a new turbo, one of the first things you should do is to do a little research. Find out if anyone else has done something similar to the vehicle you are working on. This can solve a lot of your problems in advance, and help you realize how much work is going to be needed.
-
Step 2
Determine what size turbo you want. This is also very important. With a smaller turbo, it will spool quicker to full boost but will lack some top end power. With a larger turbo, it will not spool as quickly due to a heavier compressor wheel, but will produce loads of power in the upper RPM's. You should also base your turbo size on the size of engine in your vehicle and its max rpm.
-
Step 3
After determining what size turbo you want to purchase, you need to look into what else you need to buy to run the amount of boost you want safely. Depending on your car, there may be very little you need to add, to a large group of things you need to add. You will most likely need more fuel and a way to monitor your A/F ratio, so bigger injectors, a fuel management system, possibly larger fuel rail, fuel return line, fuel pressure regulator...ect. You will also need a new exhaust manifold to direct your exhaust gases through the turbo to power it. These are just a few examples. Research is needed to know exactly what you would have to have for your specific vehicle.

Step 4
Purchase your turbo and accessories. You must be careful on this step. There are alot of cheap options out there when it comes to turbochargers, but don't be fooled. In my opinion, you should buy from a well known company when buying your turbo. Cheap knock offs (aka- ebay turbos) are known to have shaft play and other problems that can be devastating to an engine. When buying a turbo, do some research, and in my opinion stick with name brands such as Garrett, APS, Holset, ect.
