How to Refill a Hewlett Packard Ink Cartridge

You can save money by refilling your existing Hewlett Packard ink cartridges. Refill kits are cheaper than new cartridges and result in less waste. There are refill kits available for both color and black ink cartridges. The only downside to refilling your own ink cartridges is the possible mess involved. By being careful, you can avoid the mess and spend more time printing than cleaning up spilled ink.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread out your newspapers to catch any ink that may spill out.

    • 2

Remove the tape or sticker on the cartridge or puncture the sticker with a needle.

    • 3

Fill the syringe in the kit with the correct ink color. Some manufacturers have already done this for you. Follow the directions with the refill kit to determine the correct amount of ink needed to fill your cartridge (see Resources below).

    • 4

Insert the syringe into the hole you made and slowly fill the cartridge with ink. Use a paper towel to wipe off any excess.

    • 5

Clean any excess ink off the cartridge before placing back in the printer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pour existing ink out of the cartridge before you insert the refill to prevent ink from spilling out.

  • Use a clean syringe for each color; otherwise, ink colors will mix together.
