Step 1
If you live in a wooded rural area, it is likely that, especially during storm season, some trees will fall down on your property. If you are handy, you can cut them into firewood or woodworking wood. Make sure to keep the free wood in a dry place for at least one year before you burn it to help get out the moisture and get a better fire.

Step 2
If you have friendly neighbors and some free time, you can ask them if they need some help moving any of their fallen trees. To be neighborly, don't charge them a fee - just ask them if you can have free wood from the dead tree as your reward.

Step 3
Read the newspapers and contact your local governments. Occasionally, local governments give away free wood to needy families.

Step 4
If there is a lumberyard near year, talk to the manager. Often, there is wood that is of low quality or irregular shape that is of no use to the yard. They will often give you free wood or sell it to you for a very low price. Make sure to ask if it is suitable for burning or woodworking.
