How to Detect Giardia in Your Dog or Puppy
Giardiasis is a microscopic parasite that attacks the intestinal tract of not only dogs and puppies but can also affect humans as well.
Giardia is most often contracted through contaminated water or feces and is contagious. Raccoons and other woodland animals are also common carriers. It is very common with kenneled dogs as well as dogs such as coonhounds who hunt in swampy areas (not to mention contact with raccoons).
One thing to keep in mind is that not all giardia positive dogs and puppies will show outward symptoms but for those who do, these are the things that you need to look out for. Giardia can present itself with one, all or any combination of the following symptoms. Please make arrangements for your dog or puppy to visit a veterinarian if giardia is suspected so the official diagnosis and proper medication (usually Flagyl) can be given.

The first thing you will notice, especially with puppies is a loss of 'thriftiness'. They won't appear filled out as nice anymore as they rapidly lose weight.
-
2
Your dog or puppy may appear listless and tired more than usual if they have giardia. This is not always the case but if you are observant, a definite 'they just don't look right' will be on your mind.

A giardia positive dog or puppy will then begin to pass light colored stool that may consist of mucous and could even have drops of blood in it. They will likely poop often, small amounts like this. Straining is common as well.

Giardia dogs and puppies may also become dehydrated and anorexic looking. If you can pull up a bit of neck skin and it stays in place, they are dehydrated.

Yep the vets get awfully crafty here so I don't fall for every disease that comes up. What should Giardia treatment cost for a puppy Cockapoo, Im thinking very little, but Im confident that very little will be near 75-100 as its all priced for one time occurance and they have a board for pricing to be sure to capitalize on everything. Anyone know. Were in a suburban neighborhood where there are suckers everywhere. Thanks :-) -

5* Our golden retriever just got over a nasty bout of diareherra(SP?). We treated him with rice and pure pumpkin (my hubby found on the internet). Is it possible for that to go away on its own? We are wintering in AZ , from MICHIGAN, and don't have a vet! -
