How to Substitute Baking Powder in a Recipe

How many times have you gone to make a recipe, but when you went to grab the baking powder, you only found baking soda? This has happened to me so many times, that I decided to find a solution to this common baking plunder. This article will give you a few suggestions for substitutions you can make in recipes, when you are lacking baking powder. With a few common ingredients, you will be able to create that perfect cake or cookie.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Gather baking soda and cream of tartar or buttermilk.

  2. Step 2
    Baking soda
     
    Baking soda

    Measure out ¼ teaspoon of baking soda.

  3. Step 3
    Cream of tartar
     
    Cream of tartar

    Measure out ½ teaspoon of cream of tartar or ½ cup of buttermilk. If you are using the buttermilk, reduce the liquid in the recipe by ½ cup.

  4. Step 4
    Buttermilk
     
    Buttermilk

    Mix the baking soda with the cream of tartar or dissolve into the buttermilk.

  5. Step 5
    Blended
     
    Blended

    Mix the ingredients until well blended.

  6. Step 6
    Baking Powder
     
    Baking Powder

    This recipe will give you one teaspoon equivalent to baking powder.
