Heartburn is a burning sensation in the stomach or chest. It occurs when acid makes it’s way up into the esophagus. Your stomach is naturally protected from acid because it uses acid to help break down and digest your food. But, when the powerful stomach acids make their way up into your esophagus the sensitive tissues become inflamed and heartburn results. For those of you that prefer home remedies, here are a few that will help.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

At the first sign of heartburn, drink a full glass of water. This will help wash the stomach acid down out of the esophagus.

  2. Step 2

Drink raw vegetable juice for hearburn. You will need a juicer. Wash the vegetables and place them in the juicer. There is no need to peel them. Mix the vegetable juice with some water if a weaker juice is desired. Frequently drinking raw vegetable juice is not only a home remedy for heartburn; it will improve your overall health. Potato, cabbage, celery and carrot juice work well for heartburn sufferers. Filling your diet with more raw vegetables will help reduce the occurrence of heartburn.

  3. Step 3

Herbal teas prepared by steeping 1 cup of hot water with any of the following herbs will help reduce the symptoms of heartburn: ginger, chamomile, anise, caraway, fennel seed, cardamom, cinnamon, catnip, marshmallow root.

  4. Step 4

Slippery elm, or powdered marshmallow are both home remedies for heartburn because they coat the lining of your esoughagus. Mix 1 teaspoon of either in a cup of water and drink.

  5. Step 5

Licorice, available at the health food store, has been known to provide relief for recurring heartburn. This is an herbal supplement, not the candy.

  6. Step 6

Interestingly, saliva, salt and baking soda all have properties that remedy heartburn. Chew gum to help encourage saliva production, or mix ½ a teaspoon baking soda or salt in a cup of water and drink it.

  7. Step 7

Changes in your daily habits are home remedies that can minimize heartburn. Eat small meals. Eat plenty of raw vegetables. Avoid lying down for 2 hours after eating. Try eating one of the following fresh, raw fruits at mealtime: papaya, pineapple, or banana. If you are overweight, those extra few pounds can contribute to heartburn. Cut back on caffeine and greasy, fatty or fried foods.

Tips & Warnings
