The recovery rebate credit is a one time benefit for people who didn't receive a full rebate in 2008 or didn’t receive a rebate at all. This is a new income tax rebate credit from the IRS for 2009. You may be eligible for this tax rebate if you didn’t get a rebate (or only got a partial rebate) last year.

The amount you may receive will be a credit in this year income tax return, not a separate check. The recovery rebate credit may add more money to your refund or it may reduce your tax liability. These are the general requirements to be eligible for the recovery rebate credit this year

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    First visit the IRS website to learn about the requirements.
    Get the tax recovery rebate credit if you didn’t receive a tax rebate last year, also known as an economic stimulus payment. If you didn’t, you may be eligible for the recovery rebate this year. This year the rebate is $300 ($600 for married filing jointly).

  2. Step 2

    Get the tax recovery rebate credit by establishing if you received only a partial tax rebate in 2008. If last year your rebate amount was less than $600 ($1,200 married filing jointly)you may qualify for this year recovery rebate.

    Get the tax recovery rebate credit if your household has an additional qualifying child for the year 2008. You can receive up to $300 in tax rebate credit per child. The additional child may make you eligible for the recovery rebate credit this year.

    Get the tax recovery rebate credit if you got a valid social security number in 2008, but didn’t have one in 2007 may qualify you for the recovery rebate.

    Get the tax recovery rebate credit if you didn’t qualify for the tax rebate last year because you could be claimed as a dependent in 2007. But for 2008 cannot be claimed as a dependent.

    If you meet the general requirements, you need to claim the recovery rebate credit on Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. These forms will have specific instructions that will establish eligibility for the recovery rebate credit.
