Whether you are of German heritage or not, learning the German language may be very useful later in life. The use of language arts develops intellectual growth and looks wonderful on a job application. Here's how to teach your child to speak German and understand German.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The use of DVD movie videos is an excellent source of language education for a child. I highly recommend Bilingual Baby German. Please see the resources below for a link to the video on Amazon for more information. This video has taught my children all of their colors, how to count to ten and some very basic German. My children all started this video before the age of two. It is very similar to the Baby Einstein videos with the classical music. I also learned quite a bit of German with them! When your children are more advanced, the Sesame Street videos in German are excellent! You may find them on eBay or elsewhere on the internet!

  2. Step 2

Contact your local German-American School for German courses and classes in your area. In New York, visit: www.german-american-school.com for more information. These classes are wonderful and are fully Regents accredited. Many students recieve their foreign language Regents credits by 8th grade! They will learn to sing songs and how to celebrate German holidays in tradition as well as to count and read and write in German.

  3. Step 3

The Michel Thomas CDs are excellent tools for learning the German language for adults and children. You will find this method is money well spent as it is the cheapest way to learn German!

  4. Step 4

If you are a working parent, you may want to consider the idea of an AuPair from Germany. They would act as your live in language tutor teaching your child or children to use every day conversation in the German language.

  5. Step 5

Picture books are a wonderful vocabulary builder for children and adults alike.

on 1/24/2009 Very informative article! I am 1/2 German & work for a German company. I've been to Germany & find it fascinating that most people in Germany are taught to speak fluent English. I think we should all learn a 2nd language.
