A Public Service Announcement is a brief script designed to be read over the air. If your small business is promoting an event that extends beyond retail, or burrito-stuffing, a PSA may bring you some free publicity.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Company Letterhead
  • Typewriter or computer with printer
  1. Step 1

If you're not using company letterhead, be sure to put your business name, address, phone, fax, e-mail and website addresses at the top of the page in bold print. Also in bold, all caps, and a slightly larger font, write "PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT" and "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" on two separate lines, and center them in the middle of the page.

  2. Step 2

Give the PSA a simple headline ("BURRITO WORLD SPONSORS FOOD DRIVE")and compose your announcement. Write it in all caps and double or triple-space it, leaving generous margins so a radio announcer can make notes and read it clearly. Spell out numbers ("NINETEEN BURRITOS"), and when you're done, put a note at the bottom naming your media contact and providing a phone number so they can be called for more information.

  3. Step 3

You're almost done; now comes the fun part. Like Superbowl ads, radio airtime is parceled out in fifteen-second units. You need to read your PSA out loud, at a fairly fast clip, and time yourself. It can't be longer than a minute; 30 to 45 seconds would be ideal. Keep cutting until you've got a perfect, powerful blast of information on the page.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can send a press release for virtually any reason at all, and the recipient can accept or reject it for further examination. PSA's, on the other hand, are free announcements that either serve a moral purpose ("Friends don't let friends drive drunk") or support events or causes that benefit the surrounding community. Your half-off sale doesn't belong in a PSA; your canned food drive does.
  • Don't be sad if your first PSA does't get a huge response. Keep trying, and honing your skills, and you'll connect with your community in the process.
