Groceries are one of the biggest expenses in a household's budget (second usually to rent or mortgage). It doesn't have to be that way. It's possible to save a significant amount of money each time you shop for groceries, by following these tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Study your grocery store's sales ad each week, before you determine what your weekly menu will be. Most major grocery stores have their sales ads online, but if you shop at a small local grocer, stop by to pick up an ad on your way home. This strategic planning will help you save money on groceries.

  2. Step 2

Never shop for groceries without coupons. Use coupons from your Sunday paper, as well as printable coupons you find online (there's a link in the "Resources" section below).

  3. Step 3

Grow your own fruits and vegetables. Fresh produce can be expensive at the grocery store. Instead, invest a few dollars in some packets of seeds, and grow your own. This will drastically cut down on the amount of money you spend on groceries.

  4. Step 4

Never shop without a shopping list. Going to the groceries unprepared can be a disaster. You'll end up getting things you don't need, and forgetting things that you do need. Take a few minutes before you leave to write down your menu for the week, then check your fridge and pantry to see what ingredients you need to buy to make those recipes.

  5. Step 5

Never, under any circumstance, shop for groceries when you're hungry. Going immediately after a meal will save money on your grocery bill because you won't be craving anything. Hungry shoppers fill their baskets with foods they don't really need.
