Things You'll Need:
- kitchen sink with sink plug
- tub (or a second kitchen sink)
- dish soap
- white vinegar
- dish gloves
- baking soda (optional)
-
Step 1
Washing dishes by hand is a green-friendly way to do dishes. When you hand wash dishes, you help the environment by using less water and electricity. Going green is something we can ALL participate in! Keep reading to learn how to hand wash dishes.
-
Step 2
Plug one sink in your kitchen. Squirt some dish soap into the sink. (For me, two squirts usually works well for cleaning dishes.) Fill the kitchen sink about three quarters full with hot water. This will serve as your dish soaking sink.
-
Step 3
Scrape off any leftover food on the dishes into a trash bag or home compost. Put the dishes in the dish soaking sink. If the dishes are greasy or there is still hardened food on the dishes, pour in a couple tablespoons of baking soda; this will help get the dishes cleaner easier.
-
Step 4
Fill a clean tub about three quarters of the way full with hot water. This will serve as the clean rinsing tub for dishes. (If you have a second kitchen sink, just clean it, plug it, and fill will hot water.) Pour a quarter cup or so of white vinegar in the clean rinsing tub or sink; this will prevent a buildup of dish soap suds as you wash dishes.
-
Step 5
Put on a pair of dish gloves to protect your hands from the hot water.
-
Step 6
Using a clean dish rag (or sponge), it’s time to get the dirty dishes clean! Scrub one dish until it is free of food particles, grease, and other grime. Dip that cleaned dish into the rinsing tub to wash the dish soap off. Then put the cleaned dish on a dish rack or dish towel to air dry. Repeat this for all dishes.
