Lessen Stress through Meditation

When you hear the word meditation, do you automatically think of a Buddhist monk chanting and ‘ohming?’ Well, it’s time for you to change the way you think of meditating.

Meditation has been shown to benefit those with various conditions such as chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome and AIDS. Additionally, the National Institute of Health suggests reducing risk factors of heart disease by stress management methods such as meditation and yoga.

And with the stress of today's economy, we could all use a little calming of our minds and bodies. Here are five steps to start you on the road to relaxation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A quiet room or space.
  • Five-10 minutes of quiet time.
  1. Step 1

Create a space in your home specifically for mediating. It can be one whole room you set aside or a corner of a room. You can also put candles and other spiritual items in the area.

  2. Step 2

Be sure you won't be disturbed by anyone or anything. Turn the cell phone off, tell your family to leave you alone and clear your mind. If not, you may not be able to reach a deep state of relaxation.

  3. Step 3

If you're mind does gets distracted, don't get frustrated or stress about it. You probably will find your mind wandering, especially if you're just starting out- acknowledge it and let it go. Concentrate on doing the best you can.

  4. Step 4

Focus on something- your breathing or a word like serenity. Remember, meditation is an active process.

  5. Step 5

Meditate the same time everyday for the same amount of time. You can only reach the next level of meditation with repetition and practice.
