How to Attach a Non-USB Printer to a USB Port On A Computer
The most common connection method between a computer and a printer today is a universal serial bus (USB) connection. The previous standard for printers in home computing was the parallel port. Some modern computers are not equipped with a parallel port, as parallel devices have become obsolete. If your parallel printer still works great and meets your needs, you can adapt the connection to work with your newer computer.

1
Buy a parallel to USB cable or adapter. The cable is a hybrid of connectivity, with a parallel connection on the end that attaches to the printer, and a USB connection on the end that attaches to the computer. An adapter is a smaller piece; it converts a parallel port to USB, so it requires a standard USB cable in addition to the adapter itself.

2
Visit the website of the printer manufacturer and download the latest version of the drivers for your printer.

3
Install any software that comes with the product. Windows users can either let the software autolaunch from the CD, or launch it manually by navigating to the file in Windows Explorer and double-clicking it. Press the Windows key and "E" simultaneously to launch the Windows Explorer. Macintosh users run the installer by double-clicking the installer when the CD image mounts on the desktop. Some printer drivers are preloaded on the Mac, but more can be installed by selecting Software Update under the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen.
-
4
Restart the computer when the software has finished installing. Then connect the printer to the computer and turn on the printer.
-
5
Have the computer find the printer. Windows users should click the Start button at the bottom left corner of the screen, click on "Control Panel" and "open Printers and Faxes" to see the printer. Mac users should open "System Preferences," select the "Print & Fax" icon, and see the printer there.

Tips & Warnings
Check online to confirm that your printer works well using a parallel-to-USB converter.
A direct connection to the PC itself is a better idea than connecting via a USB hub.
