1
Identify Your Values
In order to set goals, you first need to identify your values. Many people set goals that don't relate to their values. Then they wonder why they feel empty once they acheive what they set out to accomplish. Write down the things you value. -
2
Know What You Want to Achieve
You know what you want. Now verbalize it. Identify what it is you want. Then ask why you want it. This will help you to figure out if what you want is in line with your values. -
-
3
Write Down Your Goals
This is crucial. Goals must not remain in your head where they can change or be forgotten. They must be written down. Write down the things you want to achieve. -
4
Determine a Target for your Goal
Read over your goals and assess whether or not they can be measured. Goals must be measurable. It is not enough to say "I'm going to lose weight" or "I'm going to save money." You must put numbers or some other way to measure what this goal really represents. Some goals have a pass or fail outcome. This is alright. So if your goal is to get a job, the way you measure it is whether or not you have gotten a job. -
5
Set a Completion Date
Every goal needs a timeframe by which it will be completed. Set a timeframe or a specific date for you to achieve your goal. If your goal won't be achieved until the distant future then set smaller intermediate goals en route to the big goal. -
6
Determine if Your Goal, Target, and Date are Attainable
It is important when setting goals to make sure they are reasonable. They should be difficult enough to require significant dedication but not impossible. This may require research to determine if the target is possible and if the timeframe you have chosen is reasonable. -
