Because Windows Vista differs substantially from other versions of Windows, many people are unaware of some of its best features. For instance, Vista allows users to choose from a pool of many different "gadget" programs that can run on the side of the desktop at all times. Gadgets can provide Windows Vista users with anything from games to weather reports to computer-diagnostic tools.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Exit or minimize all programs so that your desktop (the main screen in Windows) becomes visible.

  2. Step 2

Locate the Windows Vista sidebar, which will be on either the far left or on the far right of your desktop.

  3. Step 3

Click the "+" sign that is located at the top of the sidebar. If done properly, this will cause a new window to pop up over your desktop.

  4. Step 4

Search through the gadgets that are presented by clicking on the different categories or by typing keywords in the search box that is located in upper right-hand corner of the window. For instance, you might type in "stocks" if you're looking for a stock ticker or "clock" if you're looking for a desktop clock gadget.

  5. Step 5

Choose gadgets that will be particularly helpful to you or that you think you'll need regularly. If you live in an area with volatile weather, for instance, it might be a good idea to install a desktop weather gadget. If you a news fiend, find a newsfeed gadget to keep you updated.

  6. Step 6

Click on the gadget you want to use, continue to hold the mouse button down, drag the new gadget over to the sidebar and release it.

  7. Step 7

Repeat this process to install as many gadgets as you wish.

Tips & Warnings
  • Along with the gadgets you'll find offered initially, there are many additional Windows Vista gadgets available for download. Click on the "Get More Gadgets Online" tab that you'll see at the bottom right of the window while you're browsing.
  • Running too many gadgets at once could have a negative impact on your computer's processing speed. Only choose gadgets you need and don't clutter your sidebar up with ones that you have no real use for.
