The Foxtail palm tree is native to Northern Australia and is characteristic of having a single thin gray trunk compared to other palm trees with more than one trunk. These palm trees grow up to 30 feet tall and have feathery looking light green fronds. A foxtail palm thrives in warmer, dryer climates. Caring for one of these palm trees is relatively easy with just a few simple steps to remember.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fertilizer
  1. Step 1

Maintain a healthy soil for the palm tree to grow in. Use a nitrogen based fertilizer with magnesium, potassium, iron and copper sulfates added. Fertilizer provides the needed nutrients that are often leached out of the sandy, well drained soil that palm trees grow in. Fertilize once or twice a year.

  2. Step 2

Water slowly and infrequently. Provide sufficient water by using a slow drip system or a water bubble. Water over an extended time providing a thorough, deep watering. Do not drench or water too often. Water twice a month during the summer and once every 6 weeks during winter months.

  3. Step 3

Prune old, brown fronds to keep the tree esthetically pleasing. Prune only dead fronds. Cut about 6 inches from the trunk of the tree. Be careful not to cut too close to the trunk. Any cuts or nicks in the trunk can create an entryway for insects and disease.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to damage the bark on the tree with a lawn mower or other gardening tools. Damaged bark allows insects and diseases to enter the tree.
