Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • clean aquarium
  • soapy water (for cleaning)
  • aquarium gravel or other kind of small gravel
  • charcoal chips
  • sterilized potting soil
  • ready to plant herbs (from your local nursery or garden store)
  1. Step 1
    Start with a clean aquarium

    Start with a clean aquarium

First, you will need to an aquarium. A small to medium sized rectangular aquarium works best. This really depends on how many herbs (or other plants) you will be planting. Clean the aquarium VERY well! Use the soapy water to clean the inside and out. Clean the aquarium at twice, and make sure there are no fingerprints left behind.

  2. Step 2

Secondly, check the aquarium for leaks. You can do this by filling it with water. If you notice any leaks, seal them with epoxy sealant or clear weatherproof tape.

Next, you will create the bottom layers of the garden. To do this, you will need to use any aquarium gravel that may be left over. If you don't have any, you can purchase some. The gravel will work as a drainage base for the soil. Pour about a 1" layer of the gravel in the bottom. For the second layer, top the gravel with a 1" layer of charcoal chips.

  4. Step 4

The last step before planting is filling the tank with sterilized potting soil. Fill the aquarium to within 5 inches from the top.

  5. Step 5

Finally, you are ready to plant the herbs! Of course, you don't have to use herbs. Herbs are used because of their use and because of the great display they make. However, you can also use plants like cacti, tulips, and even annuals. (The annuals make a colorful display). Once you have the desired herb or plant, you are ready to transplant them from their containers to the potting soil in the aquarium.

Tips & Warnings
  • This herb garden works best when placed directly under or near a window.
  • Keep the soil most, but don't overwater
