1
Make regular phone calls. If you mean to call her but find that you forget, set a reminder in your computer's calendar or write it down on your family calendar at home. When you call, ask questions and listen carefully. Mention what's going on in your home, keeping things as lighthearted as possible. Find reasons to laugh together.

If your grandparent is also a great grandparent, encourage your children to participate in her life. Have your children call and visit regularly if children are allowed in the nursing home. If there is a private meeting or sitting room, ask your children to bring something to share. If they enjoy crafts or baking, encourage them to share their projects. This is as beneficial for your child as for your grandparent because children feel special when adults take an interest in their talents and they love to make contributions to others.

Interview your grandparents about your family history. Asking your grandfather to help you document your family history gives him a chance to share and contribute to a project. Make a detailed list of questions about his parents and grandparents. Take detailed notes and him know how much you appreciate his memories.

Assemble a care package for your grandmother with items that she requests. Ask her if she would like anything in particular, ranging from a deep moisturizing skin cream to her favorite hard candy. Ask her about her favorite card game or magazine and bring it to her. If possible, deliver the package in person.

Ask your grandparent to share favorite recipes with you. Assemble the recipes into a scrapbook, complete with family photos of holidays and birthdays when those dishes were served. Make copies that your grandparent can give as gifts to family and friends.

Tips & Warnings
Before you bring any food item to the nursing home, check with the staff to make sure it's allowed. For instance, seniors often enjoy hard candy but can present a danger if they have to lie flat.
