How to Recognize Symptoms of Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is the medical term for inflammation of the gallbladder. It is closely related to cholangitis, inflammation of the tubes that drain from the gallbladder into the small intestine. The gallbladder is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, just under the liver.
Cholecystitis affects more women than men, especially seniors. It is thought to be caused by stones, called gallstones, that block gallbladder exits and create an increase in bile. Risks for the condition increase with accidents caused by trauma, as well as rapid weight loss, some types of surgeries and even pregnancy.
Recognizing the symptoms of cholecystitis helps individuals seek prompt treatment.

Instructions

    • 1

Pay attention to any feelings of cramps or pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, just under your rib cage. Some individuals may feel pain in their back or right shoulder. In many cases, the pain follows meals that are heavy in fats.

    • 2

Feel your upper abdomen. Does it feel tender or hurt when you press on it? You should not experience any pain when pressing or palpating this area. If you do and there is no apparent cause, such as bruises, it's best to schedule a visit with your physician.

    • 3

Watch for any accompanying feelings of nausea, bouts of vomiting or even belching.

    • 4

Take your temperature. In many cases, inflammation produces a low grade fever. However, if you experience a high fever accompanied by chills, you may have an infection.

    • 5

Look at your eyes in a mirror. Sometimes, problems with the gallbladder can give the whites of the eyes and skin a yellowish cast, similar to jaundice. If you notice this, schedule a visit with your doctor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Treatment depends on the severity of your condition. Don't put off scheduling a visit with your physician.

  • Left untreated, some cases of cholecystitis may lead to intestinal blockage, hepatitis or blood infection.
