Most people who follow a daily cleaning regimen do not realize that the chemical-laden cleaners they use may be exposing their family to unhealthy substances. Not only are children and pets at risk, but the environment is harmed when you flush the cleaners down the toilet or rinse the cleaners down the sink. There are more natural and safe cleansing agents that will be just as effective, but will be kinder to your health and our environment.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Make a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a bucket. Use this mild solution to clean bathrooms, kitchen surfaces and floors. Vinegar's acidic qualities make it an effective cleaner that is safe for the environment.

  2. Step 2

Rub a lemon onto brass and copper for a shiny appearance. For any tough stains, add kosher salt to the dulled surface and rub a lemon cut in half. Rub the salt and cut lemon over the stain or dulled area until the spot is diminished.

  3. Step 3

Rub a lemon around soap scum in the tub and in the sink. Rinse with water. The addition of kosher salt will also lend an abrasive quality if there is food caked on the stainless steel.

  4. Step 4

Consider switching to a nationally branded natural cleaner. Brands like Clorox market eco-friendly cleaners that are plant- and mineral- based and can be used for floors, windows and countertops.

  5. Step 5

Use club soda to remove pet stains from your carpet. After your pet has an accident, quickly soak up as much solid and liquid waste you can from the carpet. Douse the stain with club soda and pat with dry paper towels. Repeat until the stain is gone and let the treated area air dry.

  6. Step 6

Purchase castille soap, a vegetable-based cleaner, to use in washing your pets or your hair. This natural cleaner does not contain the animal ingredients or additives found in most shampoos.

  7. Step 7

Add 3 tbsp. of vinegar to 1 qt. of water to make a natural window cleaner. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle (you can purchase them at the supermarket). Use a lint-free towel to clean your windows with this solution.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep all cleaners out of the reach of children. If cleaners are ingested, seek emergency care immediately.
